Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammaplasty)

Dr. James Tang on Houston Breast Augmentation

Houston breast augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular procedures at Cy Fair Plastic Surgery Center. Breast Augmentation in Houston will enhance the appearance of small breasts, breasts that have lost volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding, and breast asymmetry. Breast implants will change the size and shape of your breasts, giving you larger and fuller breasts.

Breast augmentation enhances the size of breasts by placing inflatable implants positioned either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the chest muscle. An incision is made in the crease of the breast, armpit, or around the border of the areola. The procedure can take one to two hours and performed under intravenous sedation with local anesthesia or under general anesthesia.

The results are variable and breast implants may require replacement or removal. Side effects include temporary bruising, soreness, and swelling. Breast nipple sensation may be sensitive to stimulation for several weeks.

You may return to work in two to four weeks with no heavy lifting for six weeks after your Houston breast augmentation surgery. There should not be physical contact with the breasts for three to four weeks. Scar fading will take several months to two years.

The main risk involved in breast augmentation is lack of breast implant permanence. Surgical replacement or removal may be required to treat deflation, capsular contracture, bleeding, or infection. Occasionally, increase or decrease in nipple sensation is permanent.

At your initial consultation Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. James Tang, will help you choose the type of implant that will best match the size and profile you desire. Dr. Tang is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has been performing breast augmentation surgery for over 28 years. Basically there are two types of breast implants that are available, saline or silicone.

What about silicone breast implants?

Information for Women on Silicone Breast Implant Surgery is a patient education booklet designed to provide an overview on the benefits, risks and potential complications of plastic surgery using silicone gel implants. It presents information on issues to consider when making a decision on whether breast implant surgery is right for you. Financial considerations of correcting problems that may occur and insurance issues are presented as well. Finally, for those women who choose to have breast implant surgery with silicone implants, information about selecting a size or type of implant is offered.  The surgical technique, length of time for the surgery, and the recovery time for silicone implants is about the same as for saline implants.

What about saline implants?

The most commonly used implants are saline implants. They have a silicone shell and a self sealing valve. The implants are inserted into the surgically created pocket empty with a fill tube inserted into the valve. The implants is then filled with saline. The manufacturer has a lifetime warranty on the implant if it should ever leak. A new implant will be replaced free of charge, and the surgeon’s fee will be covered for the first ten years. The implants come in different sizes and can also be filled to varying amounts within limits according to the size of the implant used. Saline implants have the same natural feel as silicone implants and have the same possible complications as silicone implants, such as capsular contracture, or hardening of the breast, wrinkling or rippling, loss of nipple sensation, asymmetry, infection, and hematoma. If a saline implant should leak, the breast will become smaller almost immediately so a deflation is easily detected. Leakage or rupture of a silicone implant can usually be detected only by mammography.

The implants are inserted through an incision in the inframammary crease. Sutures are placed internally and will gradually dissolve by themselves. Therefore no stitches have to be removed. Usually saline implants require shorter incisions than silicone implants. The scars then to fade over time, although they do not completely disappear. The scars are easily hidden by a bra or bikini. The operation is done as an outpatient and usually take one hour to perform. It is done under IV sedation and local anesthesia. You can go home immediately after the operation with someone driving. You can return to work in three to four days and resume all normal activities.
