What is Zytaze?

Zytaze is a prescription-only medical food that provides nutritional support to enhance the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections in the treatment of blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm or cosmetic procedures.  Zytaze is a propriety blend of zinc and phytase which has been added to increase bioavailability.  Each capsule contains zinc citrate 25 mg and phytase 1500 mg. Other ingredients include silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.  A recent scientific study demonstrated that increasing zinc levels for four days prior to a planned injection of botulinum toxin resulted in an increase in both the effectiveness of the treatments and the duration of the botulinum toxin.  To be effective, each molecule of botulinum toxin must be associated with a molecule of zinc.  But not all zinc is the same.  Taking a poorly absorbed form of zinc can actually compete with the absorption of better zinc available through foods.  This could be worse than taking no zinc at all.  Zytaze is specially formulated with a unique patent-pending combination of highly bioavailable, organic zinc along with phytase to maximize zinc absorption right before an injection, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injections.  The recommended dosage of Zytaze is two capsules daily for four days prior to and on the day of receiving botulinum toxin injections.  Zytaze is supplied in a blister pack of 10 clear, hard-shell capsules containing a white crystalline powder.  The cost per blister pack is usually from $40-60.
